Margaret Camarena

Margaret Camarena has served in senior management positions at educational and research institutions for the past 10 years, and has over 25 years of experience conducting research and evaluation studies in the areas of education/training, employment, health, substance abuse/mental health prevention and treatment, housing and workforce development.  Her experience encompasses a range of responsibilities that includes all aspects of managing research, evaluation, and R&D projects. She currently serves as the Director of the Social Science Research Center at Old Dominion University.  She was Vice President for Programs and Analysis at NCCEP, a non-profit agency that worked closely with national educational associations and alliances to promote policies and services to improve college access for first generation and minority students.  While at the Mid-Continent Regional Educational Laboratory, she directed collaborative action-research projects designed to reduce achievement gaps in urban and rural schools serving predominantly low-income, racial and language minority students. She evaluated W.K. Kellogg’s ENLACE initiative which supported the activities of community-education partnerships created to increase college access for first generation Latino students. Her many published works include technical assistance materials for Federal grantees and practitioners and a variety of manuals and diagnostic tools.  Most recently, she has designed and conducted training seminars in grant writing and project design for non-profit, community development and faith-based groups that serve low-income, minority communities. She holds a Ph.D. and an Ed.S. from Stanford University; an M.S. from California State University at Hayward, and a B.A. from the University of Santa Clara.
