WORKING WITH HYPERLINKS
Hyperlinks enable you move from one web document to another. When a user clicks on a hyperlink the browser displays the associated page. A number of links are possible including:
to move from one page to another in your web site. to move to pages on other web sites. to send an e-mail
Every Page Has a Unique Address
Hyperlinks work using the unique address assigned to every page on the Internet. This address is called the “Uniform Resource Locator” or “URL” for short. There are four parts to an URL.
http://www.gamaliel.org/moses/mosescalendar.html
http:// the name of the protocol used to share documents over the Internet.
www.gamaliel.org/ identifies the web server that stores the sites web files
/moses a folder on the web server
How to create a hyperlink
There are many different ways to do things. Since FrontPage 2002 allows us to have more than one web page open at this same time, it may be a good idea to open the page to which you wish to link and the page from which you wish to link before you begin this process.
On the “link from” page, type a description of the “link to” page.
Select the text that describes the page to which you wish to link. (You can also turn images into hyperlinks… Once you learn to text you can apply the same process to images.)
Hover the cursor over the text or image you have selected and right click the mouse and click hyperlink (you may also initiate this process by clicking insert and clicking hyperlink)
The insert hyperlink dialogue box opens (Take a few minutes to make yourself familiar with this dialogue box.)
Click “Existing File or Web Page You will see the address for both the “link from” page and the “link to” page in the address window.
Click on the “link to” page.
The “link to” address will appear in the address line near the bottom of the dialogue box.
Then click OK.
A LITTLE MORE ABOUT HYPERLINKS AND AFFILIATE WEBSITES
The new link appears on the link from page. All hyperlinks are underlined. FrontPage allows you to format your hyperlink in many ways including changing the font, the font size, and the color. Front page will also allow you to design at colors for visited and active hyperlinks.
The template for affiliate web sites came linked. Hyperlinks were used to allow users to move from page to page in your website. The site map is built into these links. Your users have access to every other page from every single page. A new page template is provided so that you can add as many pages as you wish without loosing this built-in navigation.
Linking your new pages to an existing page preserves the navigation. For example, you may have any number of pages under issues. The page we have provided becomes the page from which to link to other new pages that explain your issue campaigns.
You may also use hyperlinks to connect your affiliates pages to pages on another’s affiliates web. This may be useful when a number of organizations are working on the same issue and you want your leaders to see what other affiliates are doing.
LINKING TO SITES OUTSIDE OF gamaliel.org
There are many organizations whose websites have information useful to those working on justice issues. MS IE remembers the pages you visit. So let’s say you are surfing the web and you find a site that has something that would be helpful to your organization’s work. You can link to the page. This is the process.
In MS IE navigate to the “link from” page, type a description of the “link to” page on a site outside of gamaliel.org..
Then select the text that describes the page to which you wish to link. (You can also turn images into hyperlinks… Once you learn to text you can apply the same process to images.)
Hover the cursor over the text or image you have selected and right click the mouse and click hyperlink (you may also initiate this process by clicking insert and clicking hyperlink)
The insert hyperlink dialogue box opens.
Click “Browsed pages”
You will see the URL for the web sites you have recently visited in the address window.
Click on the web site page to which you wish to link.
The URL will appear in the address line near the bottom of the dialogue box.
Then click OK.
HOW TO ADD AN E-MAIL LINK
You can create a link that allows your users to e-mail you with questions about your site or to provide you with other useful information. In the affiliate template we have recommended that you provide “mailto” links not only for you as Webmaster but also for other leaders in the organization.
When your user click a “mail-to” link an addressed e-mail screen pops up.
This is the process:
In MS IE navigate to the “link from” page.
You do not have to type the e-mail address so that it visible to everyone. You can create a mail-to link using a persons name or an affiliate name. Make sure you include something like “click the underlined name to e-mail us.”
Then select the name or text that describes the action you intend to occur i.e. “E-mail My Organizer” (You could also establish an e-mail link from a picture of the leader.)
Hover the cursor over the text or image you have selected and right click the mouse and click hyperlink (you may also initiate this process by clicking insert and clicking hyperlink)
The insert hyperlink dialogue box opens.
Click “E-mail address”
You will see recently used e-mail addresses in the address window.
If the e-mail address is there, click on that address to establish the link. Otherwise, type the e-mail address for the person for whom you wish to create a “mail-to” link.
The e-mail address will appear in the address line near the bottom of the dialogue box.
Then click OK.
Save each link from page and test your link in the browser.
It is important to test your links periodically to make certain they are still working. You may want to create a “tell us if our links aren’t working” mail-to link so that people can inform you of broken links.
