Why Education? The African American Leadership Commission of the Gamaliel Foundation is composed primarily of black pastors, lay leaders and organizers. They are face to face on a daily basis with the crisis in public education. Achievement scores, dropout numbers, high school and college graduation rates, disparity in school funding, etc. are not just statistics. These are facts that affect their children, grandchildren, fellow parishioners, friends and community members in a most personal manner. The civil rights movement began with an education struggle – separate but equal was declared illegal. Today Education in America is still separate and unequal. Education is either a path to a bright future or a conveyor belt to the economic junk heap of history. African American Children are created equal by God and guaranteed equality under the constitution, but inequality in educational opportunities makes the promise a mockery.
Gamaliel works with other minorities – Latinos, Asians, and Pacific Islanders. These two are being discriminated against by the present arrangements in education. And there are many white children who are also being cheated by the system.
The AALC placed a demand on the Board, the National Staff, the Council of Presidents and all lead organizers in the network to address the issue of education at a local, statewide and national level. Gamaliel has embraced the challenge.
