With Congress on recess until early September, thousands of people spent the week of Aug. 12 delivering partial cakes and driving in a caravan to lawmakers’ district offices. Their message: Immigration reform remains important and all aspects need to be addressed.

Transit advocates in southeast Michigan heralded the start of a “new era in public transportation," as a Regional Transit Authority’s board met for the first time Wednesday. The RTA board consists of representatives from Wayne, Macomb, Oakland, and Washtenaw counties, and the city of Detroit.

The Supreme Court just aided and abetted those who seek to suppress our right to vote. A narrow majority has ruled that Section 4 of the Voting Rights Act is unconstitutional. This is the formula used to determine which states and localities need preclearance before changing their voting laws.

President Obama on April 29 nominated Charlotte Mayor Anthony Foxx for Secretary of Transportation. Transit advocates are hoping that Foxx's experience as the successful mayor of a mid-size city will ground his work as secretary.

Transportation fans like Gamaliel, home of the Transportation Equity Network (TEN), and other transit advocates were thrilled to see Charlotte Mayor Anthony Foxx nominated for Secretary of Transportation. We are hoping that Foxx's experience as a transit-oriented mayor will guide his work as USDOT head.

That’s how U.S. Rep. Paul Ryan put his immigration reform philosophy in a nutshell at a Wednesday listening session in Kenosha. The Janesville Republican, on his first tour of district town hall meetings since his campaign for vice president last year, attracted nearly 100 people to the Boys & Girls Club of Kenosha, for an afternoon session in which the immigration issue took center stage.

Kent Ferris is a native of Blair, Nebraska and currently resides in Davenport, Iowa with his family. Kent graduated from Coe College in Cedar Rapids with a bachelor’s degree in chemistry and from Mankato State University, Mankato, Minnesota, with a master’s degree in counseling and student personnel.
