MICAH Meets Deputy Transportation Secretary Mendez

WISDOM organizer Stephanie Gyldenvand, leader Kathie Zoern, Deputy Transportation Secretary Victor Mendez andWISDOM-MICAH leader Lee Henderson-Tatum met in Milwaukee to talk transportation policy. 

At the end of April, Deputy Transportation SecretaryVictor Mendez met with leaders and staff from WISDOM in Milwaukee to discuss regional issues and the department's new Local Hire pilot project.

He laid out the Department's outlook on transportation--they are looking 20 to 30 years down the line as people's travel needs will likely change. Mendez said the Department is working to better connect people to jobs, health care, and education.

Thinking about Wisconsin, a regional transit authority covering an area that goes beyond the state's boarders could help with that, the leaders agreed. He pledged to work with the group on this as well as

Local Hire update

Mendez also briefed the leaders that his colleagues met with Milwaukee's mayor--the city has already begun taking advantage of the March announcement of a local hire project to incorporate some local hiring into a streetcar project. The criteria for eligibility for the pilot is to provide access that actually connects people and communities to jobs. The project has to be in its developmental stage. The Federal Transit Authority experimental project goes through March 2017.

In addition to offering to provide technical assistance by way of webinar to assist in the understanding of the purpose and understanding of the pilot, Mendez suggested the group connect with a technical assistant who can help evaluate other potential projects for Local Hire Program.
