Time to stop fiddling around on immigration

Posted by: Gordon on 2/17/2015

While Congress and a federal judge in Texas fiddle with immigration, we’ve begun to line up clinics for Dreamers looking to begin or extend their participation in the Deferred Action for Early Childhood Arrivals program and to provide a first look at the planned Deferred Action for Parental Accountability, DAPA, process.

We are grateful that President Obama has recognized both the value and power our immigrants can bring to our economy and the moral need to welcome the stranger in our midst with dignity and respect with these two programs.PNCC Flyer

We know that many continue to look for short-term political gains by grandstanding on immigration reform but that won’t stop us now.

Instead, this weekend in Chicago and other cities around the country, Gamaliel affiliates will go on with planned events providing information about the two programs that President Obama has created through executive action: DACA for the dreamers, who came here as children born elsewhere, and DAPA for adults.

In Michigan, our affiliates like Action of Greater Lansing are pushing back, calling for example on their state’s attorney general to reverse his anti-immigrant participation in the lawsuit decided in Texas Monday.

“I’ve been able to get a job that allows me to pursue my studies,” says Vilma Cardona, a dreamer who will be volunteering at the Chicago event this Saturday. “DACA has allowed me the opportunity to do this and I encourage all who are eligible to apply.”

Also this week, Gamaliel affiliates from Hawaii, New York, and 14 other states signed a letter to senators calling for a “clean” Department of Homeland Security appropriations bill, because a fully-funded DHS is necessary to ensure our common security from terrorism and because as a nation of immigrants, ending the system that keeps so many in shadow is the right thing to do.

We know that the fiddling will continue as long as some see a way to win more votes from it by taking advantage of the fearful and the narrow minded. But we also know that it’s just that – and while some will continue to fiddle the rest of the country is listening to a different tune.
