1. Education
Disparities
Leaders:
Ms. Nancy Holmlund, WISDOM
Organizers:
Mr. Jay Klemundt, UACT
Educational equity is one of the most
nagging issues confronting our communities. Connecticut and Wisconsin
have won notable victories on kindergarten funding and education equity
issues. This workshop will tell you how to create a winning education
campaign that targets a specific education issue and wins.

Rev. Bart Beebe, MOSES,
Mr. Wallace Watson,
PIIN
Organizers:
Mr. Mike Kruglik, GF Metro Equity Dir.
Mr. Al Martin, MOSES
Public
transportation is under-funded and inadequately supported in most
communities. PIIN has just won a commitment from their governor to lead
a $649 million dollar transportation funding fight for PA. ISAIAH was
part of a coalition that won $20 million for transit funding and is
pursuing $40 million more. FACE is has launched a $4 billion dollar
light rail campaign. MOSES has a long-term campaign on transportation
that has included taking on its MPO on its discrimination against
Detroit residents. This workshop will discuss the many ways to target
MPOs, state legislatures and draw on the lessons learned.
3.
Workforce Development on Transportation Projects
Leaders: Rev. Linda MacDonald, ISAAC,
Mr. Dennis Lowder,
WISDOM
Organizers: Sr. Gail Guelker, MCU,
Ms. Laura Barrett,
GF Metro Equity
The US government pours billions of
dollars into roads. So why don’t we see more low-income people, women
and minorities constructing these highways? MCU, with their partner, UCM
won the largest community benefits agreement with any state Dept. of
Transportation. Laura Barrett of Gamaliel Metro Equity Dept. will
assist in explaining how Gamaliel's first national victory (a workforce
development agreement) and existing transportation policy will help
groups win workforce development agreements in other states. Eight
Gamaliel affiliates are pursuing workforce development ordinances on the
state and local levels. Samples of agreements and other materials will
be made available to the participants.
4. Civil
Rights for Immigrants
- The National
Campaign
Leaders: Mr. Pablo Tapia, ISAIAH
Organizers: Ms. Ana Garcia-Ashley, Gamaliel
Expert: Ms. Kate Shaughnessey, NAOC/CIR
The Civil
Rights of Immigrants (CRI) campaign has turned out thousands of people
in six states to stand up for immigrant rights in the last year. This
workshop will follow up on these amazing efforts and will focus on
carrying out the Campaign Strategy in 2007. The plan includes:
coordinating and conducting in-district meetings; making grassroots
contacts (letters, postcards, e-mail; phone calls and/or faxes); and/or
holding public events with congressional leaders.
The workshop will include a special focus on engagement with members of
Congress in the following States: CT, MI, MN, NJ, PA, WI. In addition,
strategies to generate earned media (e.g. newspaper, television, and/or
radio) for CRI will also be discussed.
5. Universal
Health Care
Leader: Rev. Richard Ellerbrake, UCM
Organizer: Ms. Ponsella Hardaway, MOSES
Expert:
Rev. Linda
Hanna Walling,
Universal Health Care Action Network (UHCAN).
Every day 50 people die because they did not have health insurance.
More than 40 million people are uninsured. Both Illinois and Michigan
are working
to find a way out of this
dilemma--universal health care.
Both states are using similar campaigns,
getting a state-wide commission appointed to
investigate the issue that then launches
state legislation. In Illinois two UCM members are on the commission.
We are in a position to influence the national debate. Learn how to
bring this home to your state.
6. HIV/AIDS,
an international issue
Leader: Ms. Mary Gruber, R. N.
Organizer: Mr. Terrence Jacob, South Africa TD,
Mr. Paul Marincel,
GF Central Staff
AIDS is devastating our world. Nearly 40
million people are infected with HIV/AIDS worldwide with 6 million in
South Africa. With the unique alliance Gamaliel has sustained between
South Africa and the US, we have a chance to impact this terrible
plague. Mary Gruber and Terrence Jacob will explain some of the work
that they have already done to further connect the self-interest of
leaders from South Africa and Minnesota.
7. Opportunity
Based Housing
Leaders: Rev. Randell Orwig, E.H.R.
Organizer: Ms. Angela James, E.H.R.,
Ms. Cathy Schap, BRIDGE
Expert: Mr. David Rusk, Gamaliel Strategic Partner
Housing is becoming unaffordable for most
working class people. Teachers and fire fighters cannot to afford to
live in the communities they serve and protect. This workshop will
present policies for creating affordable housing in communities that
are economically and racially integrated and create opportunities for
people at all income levels. BRIDGE and E.H.R. will both reflect on
their ground-breaking campaigns on inclusionary zoning. We will explore
organizing strategies to engage policy makers and organize around
opposition to such policies. Opportunity Based housing is a viable
alternative to more low-income housing on the low-income side of town.
8. Building
the Immigrant Vote
Organizers: Mr. Juan Soto, GF CRI campaign,
Ms. Norma Chavez,
JOB
Leader: Ms. Martha L. Sanchez, PNCC
Ms. Estella de los Rios, JOB
Expert: Michael D. Rodriguez, US Hispanic Leadership Institute
The massive Civil Rights of Immigrants
marches rang with the cry, “Today we March, Tomorrow we Vote!” This
workshop will make this real. Building on the successful strategy of
holding naturalization workshops and registering newly naturalized
immigrants to vote, a vision of doing massive non-partisan get out the
vote efforts in the community will be explained. JOB and PNCC will
explain their strategies for how the GOTV campaign will build the CRI
campaign, local affiliate’s immigrant base and change the turnout at the
polls.

how to analyze policy, to build important coalitions, and to effectively
lobby as well as register, educate, and vote campaigns. David will
discuss how to develop a media program that moves your agenda, energizes
your membership, and builds name recognition for your organization and
Gamaliel. How to tell your story so you strengthen your organization by
attracting supporters that believe in your mission and your capacity to
deliver!
10. Working
with Unions for Redevelopment and Against Sprawl
Organizer:
Mr. Ron Trimmer
Expert:
Mr. Greg LeRoy, Good Jobs First
Labor
unions and labor federations at both the metro and state levels are
increasingly interested in curbing sprawl and promoting smart growth.
They believe “Urban Density is Good for Union Density” because
progressive smart growth policies benefit the same workers they are
seeking to organize: women, people of color, immigrants, and low-wage
workers who cannot afford a car. Mr. Greg LeRoy will offer practical
tips about how to appeal to labor’s self-interests and broaden regional
coalitions against sprawl.
