The Rev. Dr. Yvonne Delk was executive director of the UCC Office of Church in Society, an organization that seeks to relate biblical teachings to current social issues, from 1981 to 1990.  In 1974, she became the first African American woman to be ordained in the UCC.  In 1989, she was the first woman to be nominated as candidate for the office of president of the UCC.  She was also the first woman and first African American executive director of the Community Renewal Society (CRS), a faith-based Chicago area mission agency. 

 

The Rev. Dr. Delk, who received her doctorate in ministry from New York Theological Seminary, is currently an interfaith leader, author, teacher, and speaker.  Among her recent writings are “A Moment in Turning” (in “Sojourners” 1992), “Sanctuary is More Than Architecture” (also in “Sojourners” 1993).
