ILA Youth Track

 

Mission:

Teach youth that they have an important voice in public policy and empower them to use it to affect change in their communities and the world around them. 

 

Create opportunities for youth to use their public voice and new-found knowledge by creating youth organizing components in our respective organizing projects.  (This will bring new energy to the network and train future leaders and organizers.)

 

Who:

  1. Youth age 15 and up.

 

Turnout: 

  1. We would like all Gamaliel affiliates to bring a youth delegate or delegation to the 2007 ILA

 

  1. We, the ILA Youth Track Organizers, request that the Central Staff deliver youth delegates or delegations from their regions.  We, as the organizers of the Youth Track, will assist in this turnout via 1-1 calls with organizers.

How:

  1. Work with High Schools, youth groups and organizational base to get youth delegates. 

    1. Ex: JOB in San Diego is working with 2 highschools’ Economics/Government teachers and incorporating this into the curriculum.

    2. Ex: Pilsen in Chicago is working with the Fiesta Del Sol Scholarship Alums

    3. Ex: CAUSE in Ventura is working with Future Leaders of America

  1. Create Curriculum for students leading up to the ILA

    1. This will be created on a per-affiliate bases depending on the strategy used.

    2. Draft materials can be provided by the Youth Track Organizers if wanted

    3. Ex: Watch movies and dialogue, Candidate Research, Mock Debate, CCC Video…

  2. Include 1 training for youth at the ILA  “SPEAK!”

    1. Historical training that discusses how youth have affected policy and made their voices heard.  Dialogue about the walkouts during the Civil Rights movement, Immigration Movements, the Jena 6…)

    2. GOTV Training

  3. Logistics

    1. Funding

                                                               i.      Youth Track Organizers are fundraising for Discretionary funds- Grants

                                                             ii.      If Gamaliel receives the $40,000 grant from CCC, we wish to receive finding for some of the youth delegates

                                                            iii.      Organizations working with schools will ask Board Members to sponsor students

                                                           iv.      Local fundraisers- Carwashes, House Parties, etc…

    1. Travel

                                                               i.      Chaperones

                                                             ii.      Release and Waiver for students under 18

    1. We can accommodate 75 youth

    2. We must have the number by November 19, 2007

  1. Engagement once students return

    1. Students work with local Gamaliel organizations to Register Voters

    2. Students write Letters to Senators, give presentation to other students

  2. Opportunities to grow the local organizations: 

    1. Gamaliel locals create school chapter or youth chapter

    2. Student press conference and interviews once return- Visibility

    3. There is funding in youth organizing

    4. Youth have parents who can be organized
