Gamaliel National Clergy Caucus offers resources
for one year Anniversary Observances

The suffering of those who lived in this region prior to Katrina continues. Many residents have become part of a new American Diaspora, unable to return to their homes in New Orleans and on the Gulf Coast.

The GNCC is offering materials for faith community observances of the One-year Anniversary of Katrina. Gamaliel congregations are invited to use these materials as is or adapt them to fit their own ways of remembering and praying.

The materials include a prayer, a litany, and a bulletin insert that can downloaded and produced locally.

powell and allies call for the SEASON of PRAYER to continue as the August 29th anniversary of Katrina draws near.

john powell, is calling for the Season of Prayer to continue the weekend of August 25-27.

  • Katrina uncovered the deplorable state of poverty in our nation, exposing the extent of concentrated poverty, rigid class divisions, and neglect of disadvantaged and marginalized populations in America.

  • 75% of residents displaced by Katrina and Rita indicate that they plan on returning home. Despite the desire to return home, recent data suggests that those dreams remain unfulfilled, especially for people of color.

  • The displaced populations of Hurricane Katrina, who have dispersed across the country, continue to face a great deal of adversity regarding housing, employment, mental and physical health, and education.

  • Although significant resources have been de-voted to Gulf Coast recovery, much of current appropriations have gone to address infrastructure cleanup and restoration to pre-Katrina conditions. This leaves a significant gap in addressing the social, educational and health needs of those impacted by Katrina.

powell, a Gamaliel Foundation Strategic partner is leading a growing alliance of partners working to restore opportunity for the residents of the gulf coast. The work of this alliance is detailed at  www.linkedfate.org

Gamaliel Members would do well to act on the two fold request of Gamaliel leadership bodies

In mid-March Rev. Kevin Turman, Chair, Council of Presidents, Rev. Joe Games, Chair, Gamaliel National Clergy Caucus, Rev. Michael Harrison, Chair, African American Leadership Council,  Mr. Pablo Tapia, Chair, Civil Rights of Immigrants Taskforce, Dr. Ron Trimmer, Co-Chair, National Leadership Assembly and  Rev. Ralph Newell, Co-Chair, National Leadership Assembly came to the membership of Gamaliel a two-fold request to help Katrina’s victims.

The chairs called on members to asks all member congregation clergy leaders offer prayer and reflection in their services during the first season of Prayer and Action for Victims of Katrina.

The chairs also called on Gamaliel members to consider asking members of affiliate boards to visit your federal representatives and ask them to support legislation that adheres to the following principles:

  1. that the federal government help meet the needs of displaced people; and

  2. that the people impacted by Hurricane Katrina must participate in the decisions being made about their lives.

A suggested format for your visit to federal representatives is provided under resources for action.
