Ana stokes Fire of Faith at MORE2

The MORE2 October 18 Fire of Faith public meeting was an energizing event that served as the culmination of months of work around local, regional and national issues. The crowd of over 200 attendees included members of MORE2’s 20 metro area congregations and their supporters, from union members to elected officials.

The meeting lifted up two critical Kansas City MO City Ordinances, Ban the Box (which would remove any criminal history questions off of the KCMO employment application) and the strengthening and renewal of the Workforce Ordinance, which is responsible for ensuring jobs for women and minorities on KCMO-funded construction projects. Leaders within MORE2 gave powerful testimony detailing the necessity for the passage of these policies in order to create a more equitable region.

Pastor Councilman Michael Brooks publicly agreed to sponsor each ordinance; Councilwoman Jan Marcason, Councilman Jermaine Reed, Councilman Jim Glover and Councilman John Sharp stood in support of both ordinances, each surprising the audience by declaring intent to not only support but also co-sponsor the legislation with Councilman Brooks.

The meeting included a powerful launch of a new Education Initiative, 2x2, which will match area students with volunteers from congregations throughout the metro area. Volunteers will help students reach academic and personal goals, making a commitment to “partner” not only with the school but also develop a personal relationship with the student and his/ her family. Thirteen area congregations boldly committed to supporting 2x2 with MORE2.

Gamaliel’s Executive Director Ana Garcia-Ashley roused the crowd around the national Fire of Faith Campaign. Leaders followed Ana to testify about the crucial role of the federal budget in our area work. The leaders then announced the signing of a covenant, designed to protect the federal budget and services critical to the welfare of ALL Americans, by Senator Claire McCaskill (who could not be present). Darwin Curls, assistant to Congressman Emanuel Cleaver, attended the meeting and presented the Gamaliel/MORE2 Covenant, prepared and signed by Congressman Cleaver, near the conclusion of the meeting.
