Comprehensive Immigration Reform NOW

GAMALIEL JUNE 19TH WASHINGTON Religious Leaders

March to the White House

We can't wait:

  • Because men, women and children are dying along the U.S. border in an effort to pursue a better life;

  • Because women and men, native born and immigrant, continue to work under horrible conditions for low wages and no benefits;

  • Because high school graduates are unable to pursue higher education because of their immigration status;

  • Because families are being torn apart due to visa backlogs, arrests and deportations.

All Gamaliel Religious Leaders are called
to Washington DC
to participate
in a National Day of Prayer and Action
for the passage of
Comprehensive Immigration Reform.

a Call for Action and Prayer.

The Strive Act is movement forward but needs the following improvements:

  • Accelerate the Process, Drop the Trigger to Implementation – How many years will pass until vulnerable immigrants can
    become full participants in American society?

  • Reduce the Fees – Added up, the cost for households may make legal residency unreachable for too many struggling immigrant families.

  • Punt “Touch Back” – While soft in comparison to past proposals, this is still an unnecessary and arbitrarily imposed burden for too many long term residents of our communities.

  • Job Training – Any comprehensive immigration reform must also create new opportunities and strengthen worker and anti-discrimination rights for all workers.

  • Protect Public Safety – Any blurring of the line between the role of federal immigration enforcement and local law enforcement is unacceptable.

  • New Worker Portability – Provisions of the New Worker program may inadvertently weaken the principle of job portability.

  • Reject Criminalizing Immigrants – Reform aggravated felony definitions and unfair laws that put immigrants at risk of detention, raids and family separation.

  • Judicial Discretion and Review – Create judicial waivers that allow judges to weigh circumstances in individual cases and restore fair access to courts.

  • Preserve the DREAM Act – DREAM Youth should not need to wait excessively long periods of time to become full participants in our society.

  • Social Security – The STRIVE Act lacks a provision to ensure confidentiality in the use of identification numbers or protection from future prosecution.
