History

 

  • Spring, 1999: Religious leaders from diverse faith communities began meeting monthly to discuss the health of metropolitan Syracuse.

  • 2000: ACTS was organized.

  • February 28, 2000: First Covenant Ceremony at University UMC. Twenty congregations publicly committed to ACTS.

  • Seprember, 2000: Issues Assembly, following an in-reach process into each faith community. Four key and timely issues affecting Greater Syracuse chosen: a) Youth Violence; b) Youth Opportunities; c) Better Jobs; d) Education.

  • March, 2003: Public Meeting, with a turnout of 900 people.

  • Summer, 2003: ACTS faith-communities declared Holy Ground in the neighborhoods surrounding their congregations.

  • July 16, 2003: ACTS sponsored a Youth and Young Adult Career Expo and Speak Out at Syracuse Universit’s Hendricks’ Chapel, with 150 young people attending.

  • October 26, 2003: Holy Ground Public Meeting, with 500 people attending to address Quality-of-Life concerns in Greater Syracuse identified during the Holy Ground walks.

  • May 20, 2005: ACTS held an Economic Summit at Onondaga County Community College with Gamaliel Foundation organizations in the Capital Region (ARISE), Buffalo (VOICE) and Long Island (LION),

  • September 19, 2005. ACTS united with the City-wide Coalition of Urban Pastors and the Interdenominational Ministerial Alliance to sponsor a Candidates Forum for Mayoral candidates.

  • November 7, 2005: ACTS organized a meeting with newly re-elected Mayor Matt Driscoll, uniting once again with City-wide Coalition and IMA as well as other faith-communities, to present pressing issues and concerns.

  • Summer, 2006: ACTS has brought the most leaders to the first retreat to the New York Thruway Alliance, and is one its core organizations.

  •  Syracuse Housing Authority:

    1. Include Hopps in all aspects of planning for demolition of the old Salvation Army Building.

    2. Repair all sidewalks and remove overgrown shrubbery by fall 2004.

    3. Work with ACTS to hold a Housing Summit by December, 2004 to address bringing homeownership opportunities to revitalize vacant lots and abandoned buildings in our holy area.

  •  US Dept. of Housing Urban Development

  1. Educate the community on their Section 8 homeownership program

  2. Host the first planning meeting of the Housing Summit Planning Group.

  • City of Syracuse:

    1. Address the 24 abandoned houses within the next 90 days

    2. Work with ACTS to plan Housing Summit.

    3. Work with ACTS to provide an education campaign about new homeownership programs, especially for low-moderate income families in Syracuse.

  • CENTRO

    • Commit resources and collaboration on ACTS’ “Transit Sabbath Weekend for Faith Communities of Greater Syracuse,” January 30 – Feb 1.
