·        ABLE Faith and Democracy Training for Core Team members from ABLE congregations and organizations at First Iconium Baptist Church on Sat. June 28 from 9:00 am to 3:30 pm. 

·        Faith Alliance of Metro Atlanta Forum on The Prophetic Tradition in the African American Church at Morehouse College on Thurs. June 5 at 7:00 pm. 

·        First Iconium Baptist Church Social Justice Forum on Spirituality, Politics, and Community Action on Tues. June 10 from 7:00-9:00 pm. 

·        African American Leadership Conference in Detroit, Michigan from Thurs. June 12 at 11:00 am to Fri. June 13 at 4:00 pm. 

·        Center for Community Change Southeast Field Training on the Community Voting Project in Nashville, Tennessee on Thurs. June 19 and Fri. June 20. 

·        Healthcare-NOW rally in support of National Single Payer Universal Healthcare Bill in Congress at the Blue Cross/Blue Shield Headquarters in Buckhead on Thurs. June 19 from 3:00 – 5:30 pm.

Atlantans Building Leadership for Empowerment will have Core Team Training for ABLE congregations and organizations.  The training will include a Faith and Democracy Conversation “A Single Garment of Destiny”.  There will be tracks for congregations, unions, and a track for Spanish speakers.  The purpose of the training is (1) to identify new prospective leaders, (2) to strengthen your core team, (3) to connect faith, values, and living a public life, (4) to deepen the analysis of race and racial justice, and (5) to strengthen your congregation’s or organization’s involvement in ABLE.  For additional information, contact Sherita Edwards at Sherita@gamaliel.org

The Faith Alliance of Metro Atlanta will have a forum on “Heeding the Call: The Prophetic Tradition in the African-American Church” at Morehouse College.  Panelists include Rev. Dr. Barbara King (Minister  of the Hillside Chapel and Truth Center), Rev. Dr. Mark Lomax (Minister of First African Presbyterian Church), and Rev. Dr. Kenneth Samuels (Minister of Victory for the World Church).  Dean Lawrence Edward Carter, Sr.  (Dean of the Martin Luther King, Jr. International Chapel) will serve as moderator.

First Iconium Baptist Church is sponsoring a Social Justice Forum on “Spirituality, Politics, and Community Action: Can You Combine the Three?”  Panelists include Rev. Ed Loring (Open Door Community), Rev. Timothy McDonald (First Iconium Baptist Church), and Minister Nadee Shaka Muhammad (New Black Panther Party).  Other invited panelists include Nan Orrock (Georgia State Senator) and Rev. Mark Lomax (First African Church).

 The Gamaliel Foundation African American Leadership Commission will have their 2008 Conference on June 12-13 in Detroit, Michigan.  The theme of the conference is “Uniting for Power: Turning Our Learning Into Action”.   This conference will lift up and increase the ability of African American Clergy, Leaders and Organizers to organize and build organizations in their metropolitan regions to address issues of social justice.  The registration fee is $300 and includes hotel, meals, and training.  If you are interested in attending this conference, contact Sherita Edwards at Sherita@gamaliel.org .

The Center for Community Change in partnership with Wellstone Action will have Southeast Field Training in Nashville, Tennessee.    ABLE has been invited to send three representatives to be trained on how to conduct a successful Get Out the Vote Campaign.  Topics to be covered include (1) building community power through voter engagement, (2) running an effective phone program, (3) canvassing, (4) overcoming tough objections to voting, and (5) organizing a candidate forum.  The deadline to register is June 13.  If you are interested in attending, contact Sherita Edwards at Sherita@gamaliel.org .

Healthcare-Now will sponsor a rally at the Blue Cross / Blue Shield Headquarters in support of HR 676, Rep. John Conyers’ bill for National Single Payer Universal Healthcare.  From June 18-20 the American Health Insurance Plans will be meeting in San Francisco’s Convention Center and hearing from speakers who oppose proposals that remove big health insurance companies from our healthcare.
