DELMARIE L. COBB - Biography

The Publicity Works is a Chicago-based public affairs, political consulting and media relations firm, owned and operated by veteran journalist, Delmarie Cobb. She is also the president of Deleco Communications Inc., a television production company, which produced the award winning, nationally televised newsmagazine program, STREET LIFE.

Ms. Cobb has been a practicing journalist for over two decades. She started as a television news reporter working for network affiliates in various markets throughout the country. Upon returning to Chicago, she became a radio talk show host, a television producer, and a columnist—writing social and political opinion pieces for N'DIGO Magapaper. Ms. Cobb brings to a project her knowledge of the media; the respect of her peers; and her experience in hard news reporting and politics.

In 1996, she became the first African-American press secretary to the DEMOCRATIC NATIONAL CONVENTION. Ms. Cobb was an advisor to Illinois Comptroller DAN HYNES and communications director for the re-election of DICK DEVINE for Cook County state’s attorney. The Publicity Works also served as the political consulting firm to U.S. Rep. JESSE JACKSON JR., in the 1995 special election—developing the need for the South Suburban Airport as the major plank of his campaign platform. Three years earlier, she helped to orchestrate a victory for Congressman BOBBY RUSH against incumbent U.S. Rep. Charles Hayes.

Ms. Cobb began her media duties for political campaigns in 1988, when she was hired as the national traveling press secretary to presidential candidate JESSE JACKSON. She was communications director for DAVID ORR, during his first race for Cook County Clerk in 1990. Ms. Cobb also was media consultant on the successful campaigns of 29th District State Representative DAVID MILLER; Aldermen TERRY PETERSON, and ANTHONY BEALE; Circuit Court Judge BERNETTA BUSH; and Cook County Commissioner BOBBIE STEELE. She also has advised many other statewide and national campaigns.

During the 17 years Ms. Cobb has headed her two companies, she has helped to nurture and develop the journalism careers of nearly a dozen young adults who have interned in her office.
