We are writing you because the voter registration deadlines are
approaching in many states. People are disenfranchised at the
voting booth these days in many ways. It can be something very
simple, like moving and not registering to vote at your new address.
Some of your members may be in danger of losing their right to vote
because they are not properly registered. We believe that religious people have a
responsibility to vote. The first step in exercising this
responsibility is to register to vote.
Because
we believe you share this conviction that voting is an important
responsibility of citizenship, we are asking you to do two things:
-
Use
your good office to encourage people to register so that they can
vote November 7th. This is appropriate non-partisan, not-for-profit
organization behavior.
-
Challenge your core team
to mount a
“register, educate, and get out
the vote” initiative that includes:
-
Providing a place in the church for registration.
-
Setting
up a follow-up telephone campaign within each
congregation.
-
Reminding people to vote through a telephone campaign,
posters, by mail, by e-mail, and from the pulpit.
-
Providing transportation to the polls.
Here is what Gamaliel is doing to help:
-
A
"Your Vote Is Your Voice" web page has been created and is
accessible from the
www.gamaliel.org home page. This page has links that provide
ways for people to register to vote!
-
We
are sending an action alert to our organizers asking them to support
you in this effort to encourage your core team to plan a
register and get out the vote initiative.
-
We
are providing some simple materials to support this effort.
Here
is the link to those resources. Feel free to adapt them for your
own use.
-
We
are sending a register to vote action alert to those who are
included in the NewsFromGamaliel listserv. This
interactive action alert allows people to register from the
action alert e-mail.
-
The
IDC team is inviting enrolled organizations to participate in
this register to vote action alert.
We can
use modern technology to support our work, but we know that YOUR
VOICE IS A POWERFUL VOICE that can get people to the polls November 7th. We ask
you to use your powerful relationships to deliver this
simple message:
YOUR VOTE IS YOUR VOICE.
VALUE YOUR VOTE AND VOTE YOUR VALUES.
